azureai-searchbot
AzureAI-SearchBot is a legitimate web crawler operated by Microsoft Corporation as part of its Azure AI Search (formerly Azure Cognitive Search) service. It collects publicly accessible web content to power the indexing and retrieval capabilities of Azure AI Search, enabling enterprises to build custom search experiences over their own datasets or public web pages. The bot is documented in Microsoft’s official documentation for the web crawler indexer (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/search/search-indexer-howto-web-crawler).
The crawler uses a standard HTTP/1.1 GET request model and identifies itself with the User-Agent string Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; AzureAI-SearchBot/1.0; +https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/search/search-indexer-howto-web-crawler). It originates from Microsoft’s Azure datacenter IP ranges, which are published in the Azure IP Ranges and Service Tags – Public Cloud JSON file (microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=56519). The bot supports both HTTP and HTTPS protocols and can send conditional requests using If-Modified-Since and ETag headers to reduce bandwidth. Crawl frequency is configurable by the indexer owner, but by default it follows a polite crawl interval that can be overridden. The bot does not execute JavaScript or load external resources like images or CSS.
According to Microsoft’s documentation, AzureAI-SearchBot respects the robots.txt exclusion standard by default. The crawler reads the Disallow directives and will not crawl disallowed paths. However, administrators can optionally configure the indexer to ignore robots.txt when crawling sites they own or have explicit permission to access, as noted in the official “Configure indexers to ignore robots.txt” guidance (learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/search/search-indexer-howto-robots-txt).
The primary detection indicator is the exact User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; AzureAI-SearchBot/1.0; +https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/search/search-indexer-howto-web-crawler). A secondary pattern includes requests originating from Azure datacenter IPs (region-specific ranges) and the absence of typical browser headers like Accept-Language or Referer. The bot also sets a custom header Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8.
Collected data is used to index web pages into an Azure AI Search index, which then supports full-text search, vector search, and hybrid retrieval for enterprise applications. The crawled content may be stored temporarily in Azure Storage and processed through AI enrichment pipelines (e.g., key phrase extraction, language detection). No data is used for unrelated AI training; it remains within the customer’s search service.
Despite its legitimacy, AzureAI-SearchBot can generate high request volumes when indexing large sites, making rate limiting prudent. Many web servers apply threshold-based blocking (e.g., 100 requests per minute per IP) to prevent resource exhaustion while still allowing the crawler to eventually complete its indexing task.
