black-hole
Black Hole is a widely-known automated web vulnerability scanner first documented by security researchers at Sucuri in 2013. It is believed to be maintained by a Russian-speaking threat actor group, and its source code has been shared on underground forums like Exploit.in. This tool is categorized as a malicious bot by Cloudflare's Bot Management and Imperva's Advanced Bot Protection due to its consistent use in large-scale reconnaissance attacks against web applications.
Black Hole performs automated scanning for SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), local file inclusion (LFI), remote file inclusion (RFI), and directory traversal vulnerabilities. It sends crafted payloads to target URLs and analyzes HTTP responses for error patterns indicative of vulnerability. The tool also includes a brute-forcing module for administrative login pages, especially for WordPress, Joomla, and phpMyAdmin. It utilizes multi-threading to scan hundreds of hosts simultaneously and can automatically generate target lists from Google dork search queries. Observed behaviors include sequential probes without proper session handling, often leaving distinctive fingerprints in server logs.
Public sightings of Black Hole date back to early 2013, when Sucuri noted a surge in compromised sites exhibiting identical scan patterns. In 2015, a variant of the tool was used in a campaign against over 10,000 WordPress installations, exploiting vulnerable plugins. While Black Hole has no CVEs of its own, it has been actively used to exploit CVE-2015-2068 (Magento SQL injection) and CVE-2018-7600 (Drupalgeddon2). Security aggregator OTX AlienVault and GitHub honeypot logs confirm ongoing usage through 2023.
The primary detection indicator is the User-Agent string: "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Black Hole)" or minor variations. Behavioral fingerprints include rapid requests to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, /index.php?option=com_user, and /phpmyadmin/scripts/setup.php with appended SQL injection payloads. The bot typically lacks a Referer header, does not accept cookies, and sends unrealistic request rates exceeding 100 requests per minute.
If undetected, Black Hole can comprehensively map all exploitable vulnerabilities in a web application, leading to data exfiltration, server takeover, or website defacement. The automated nature of the tool means that even a single unpatched vulnerability can result in full compromise, exposing sensitive customer data and credentials.
Black Hole is blocked immediately upon detection because its sole purpose is malicious reconnaissance with no legitimate use case. Organizations should implement WAF rules to reject requests containing "Black Hole" in the User-Agent, enforce strict input validation, and deploy rate limiting to neutralize automated scanners.
