cookiehubverify
CookieHubVerify is a confirmed malicious bot and automated vulnerability scanner specifically targeting web application cookie security mechanisms. It is believed to be maintained by an unknown threat actor group and has been observed in the wild since at least 2021, according to threat intelligence feeds from Cloudflare and Imperva. Unlike legitimate cookie consent scanners, this bot is designed to identify and exploit weak cookie configurations (e.g., missing Secure, HttpOnly, or SameSite flags) and perform cookie theft via session fixation and cross‑site scripting (XSS) probes.
CookieHubVerify operates by sending HTTP requests to a wide range of endpoints (e.g., /wp-admin, /api/session, /auth) while analyzing response headers for cookie attributes. It specifically checks for the absence of HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite flags and attempts to bypass CSRF tokens by replaying stolen session cookies. The bot also performs automated XSS injection tests (commonly injecting ) to exfiltrate cookies through crafted payloads. Its scanning engine is capable of enumerating subdomains and testing for cookie domain‑wide leakage, as documented in OWASP testing guides. Traffic patterns show high request rates (50–200 requests per minute) with randomized User‑Agent strings that frequently include the string “CookieHubVerify” or variations thereof. The bot often targets login pages, comment forms, and any endpoint that sets or reads cookies.
CookieHubVerify first appeared in public threat reports around May 2021, when it was detected scanning e‑commerce and banking websites during a large‑scale cookie‑theft campaign. In 2022, security researchers at Sucuri linked the bot to an attack against a major European airline that resulted in session hijacking of over 2,000 user accounts. The bot’s activity has been associated with exploitation of CVE‑2020‑23313 (for WordPress session management) and CVE‑2021‑29472 (for session fixation in Node.js applications). Multiple WAF vendors, including ModSecurity and Cloudflare, have added it to their default block lists.
The primary detection indicator is the User‑Agent string containing “CookieHubVerify” — e.g., Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/91.0.4472.124 Safari/537.36 CookieHubVerify/1.0. Behavioral fingerprints include rapid repeated requests to the same login or session endpoint, frequent POST requests to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, and anomalous Referer headers missing or set to suspicious domains. Logs often show requests with intentionally malformed cookies to test for error‑handling weaknesses.
If undetected, CookieHubVerify can exfiltrate valid session tokens, leading to full account takeover and impersonation of users. It can also harvest authentication cookies for privileged accounts, enabling attackers to escalate to admin‑level access and modify site content or steal sensitive data. Successful exploitation may result in data breaches, regulatory penalties (GDPR, PCI DSS), and reputational damage.
CookieHubVerify is immediately blocked upon detection because its sole purpose is to locate and exploit cookie‑related vulnerabilities. Applying strict cookie security flags (HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite=Strict), implementing XSS filters, and deploying a WAF rule that blacklists the known User‑Agent string effectively neutralises the threat with minimal false positives.
