emailcollector
EmailCollector is a web crawling bot operated by EmailCollector Inc., a company specializing in B2B data enrichment and email verification services. Its primary purpose is to discover publicly accessible email addresses from websites, directories, and contact pages to populate the company’s proprietary lead generation and email validation platform. The bot is documented in an official crawler policy at https://emailcollector.com/crawler and is considered a legitimate, non-malicious agent.
The bot employs a breadth-first crawl strategy starting from seed URLs of business directories, following same-domain links. It sends HTTP GET requests at an average rate of 5 requests per second per IP, with bursts up to 10 requests per second for short intervals, using HTTP/1.1. The crawler respects Retry-After response headers and is sourced from a dedicated /24 IPv4 subnet owned by EmailCollector Inc. It does not execute JavaScript, focusing exclusively on static HTML content, and honors the X-Robots-Tag header for page-level control.
According to the company’s published policy, EmailCollector fully obeys robots.txt directives. It checks for Disallow rules before each request and immediately ceases crawling of forbidden paths. The bot re-checks robots.txt at least every 24 hours, and multiple web administrators have confirmed in community forums that it stops crawling after a Disallow rule is applied.
The primary User-Agent string is EmailCollector/1.0 (compatible; +https://emailcollector.com/bot). Behaviorally, it sends a custom header X-EmailCollector-ID containing a unique session identifier and requests only HTML pages, ignoring images, CSS, and JavaScript. The standard Accept-Language header is set to en-US.
Collected email addresses undergo multi-stage validation including syntax checks, domain MX record verification, and SMTP mailbox testing. The resulting clean lists are sold as part of EmailCollector Inc.’s lead generation and email marketing services. The data also trains internal machine learning models for email pattern recognition and verification algorithm improvement. No personal information beyond publicly listed email addresses is stored.
Although EmailCollector is legitimate, its aggressive scanning of contact pages can degrade performance for under-resourced websites. Rate limiting with a threshold of 20 requests per minute per IP is recommended; after exceeding this, the bot may be temporarily blocked to protect server resources, consistent with industry guidelines for high-volume crawlers.
