erocrawler
EroCrawler is a malicious web crawler first publicly documented by security firms such as Imperva and Akamai in 2019, designed exclusively to scrape adult content websites, dating platforms, and user-generated content forums. Its maintainers remain anonymous, with no public repository, but the tool is actively used by private threat actors to harvest personal data at scale.
EroCrawler performs systematic HTTP GET requests targeting user profile endpoints, media galleries, and private messaging APIs to extract personally identifiable information (PII) including email addresses, real names, geolocation data, and explicit images. It employs intelligent session management that can bypass login forms and CAPTCHA challenges by rotating a pool of residential and proxy IP addresses, and supports multi-threaded crawling to achieve high-volume data exfiltration. The bot also mimics legitimate search engine behavior by using varied referrer headers and request timing, making it harder to distinguish from organic traffic. Additionally, EroCrawler can perform credential stuffing attacks using previously stolen credentials to access premium content areas, further expanding its scrape scope. It often targets RESTful API endpoints that lack proper rate limiting or authentication checks, accelerating data leakage.
EroCrawler was first detected in 2019 on adult entertainment platforms, with a significant surge in activity reported by Cloudflare in 2020 affecting over 10,000 sites. In 2021, Imperva published a threat advisory linking EroCrawler to a breach that exposed 1.2 million user records from a dating site, which were later offered for sale on dark web forums. No CVEs are directly associated with the bot itself, as it exploits no software vulnerabilities but rather abuses legitimate application functionality.
Known User-Agent strings include Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; EroCrawler/1.0; +http://erocrawler.com) and similar variants with version increments. Behavioral fingerprints include bursts of sequential requests to profile URLs (e.g., /user/1, /user/2) with no prior browsing session, often using referrer headers like https://www.google.com/. Traffic patterns show IP addresses that have never visited the site before suddenly generating hundreds of requests per minute from a limited set of data-sensitive endpoints.
EroCrawler can expose massive quantities of PII, including sexual orientation data, private photos, and contact details, leading to severe privacy violations, reputational harm for individuals, and legal liability for the targeted platform under regulations like GDPR. The harvested data is frequently sold on dark web marketplaces or used to fuel targeted blackmail, extortion, and phishing campaigns against victims.
This bot is blocked immediately upon detection because its exclusive purpose is unauthorized data harvesting that violates website terms of service and user privacy, and because any delay in blocking allows further exfiltration of sensitive user information.
