iim-405
iim_405 is a legitimate web crawler operated by the IIM Corporation (Intelligent Information Management), a technology company specializing in large-scale data acquisition for natural language processing research. First observed in early 2024, its primary purpose is to collect publicly available web content to train and improve proprietary language models and machine translation systems. The crawler feeds data into IIM’s internal AI platform, which is not publicly accessible.
The bot uses standard HTTP/1.1 requests with a consistent User-Agent string “Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; iim_405/1.0; +https://iim.example.com/bot)” and often includes a referrer pointing to the same policy page. It respects the robots.txt protocol by default, but its crawl frequency can be aggressive – up to 50 requests per second on initial indexing bursts, then tapering to 5–10 req/s for re-crawls. Observed IP ranges belong to a /18 CIDR block (e.g., 203.0.113.0/18) allocated to IIM’s primary datacenter in Singapore, as confirmed by reverse DNS lookups. The bot uses asynchronous HTTP connections and prefers HTML content over binary files, sending a “Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml” header.
According to IIM’s official documentation at https://iim.example.com/bot-policy, the crawler fully honors Disallow directives after an initial request. The bot checks robots.txt once per domain and caches the file for up to 24 hours. Independent testing by webmasters (circa April 2024) confirmed it ignores rules only when the file is unreachable, and even then it applies a built-in delay.
The primary identifier is the User-Agent string “iim_405/1.0”. Secondary indicators include a “X-Robots-Tag” header sometimes sent as “noindex” on non-content pages, and a distinctive TLS fingerprint (JA3 hash: 8d8b8c8a8e8f8d8c8b8a) found in security logs. The bot also sets a persistent cookie “iim_session” during long-running crawls.
Collected data is used exclusively for AI training, specifically to fine-tune IIM’s multilingual models. The company’s privacy policy states that personal identifiable information is stripped during preprocessing, and no user session data is stored. The data repository is internal and not shared with third parties.
Rate limiting is recommended for iim_405 because its burst behavior can overwhelm small sites; typical threshold-based blocking sets a cap of 20 requests per minute per IP. This policy preserves site performance while still allowing the bot to gather necessary data for legitimate AI research.
