OrangeSpider uses standard HTTP GET requests with a moderate crawl rate, typically pausing several seconds between requests to a single domain. Its IP addresses belong to Orange's own ASN (AS5511) and registered subnets, which are publicly listed in RIPE. The bot supports conditional requests via If-Modified-Since and ETag headers to minimize bandwidth usage. It does not execute JavaScript or fetch non-text resources aggressively, and usually maintains only one concurrent connection per host to avoid overwhelming servers.
OrangeSpider fully respects the robots.txt standard, as confirmed by Orange's official webmaster documentation. It honors Disallow directives and also follows Crawl-delay instructions when present. Webmasters can control its access by adding appropriate rules, with a recommended crawl-delay of at least 5 seconds for shared hosting environments.
The primary detection indicator is the User-Agent string: "OrangeSpider/1.0" or "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; OrangeSpider/1.0)". Version numbers like "OrangeSpider/2.0" have been observed. Behavioral fingerprints include a consistent request interval, no cookie acceptance, and no JavaScript execution. The bot does not spoof its identity and presents the same user-agent across all sessions.
Collected data is used to populate Orange's internal search index for orange.fr and to aggregate news and multimedia content for Orange's mobile applications. The crawler does not feed data into AI model training or third-party analytics; its sole purpose is improving search relevance and content discovery within the Orange ecosystem.
OrangeSpider should be rate-limited to prevent excessive resource consumption, especially on smaller servers.
