owler-bot
Owler-bot is a legitimate web crawler operated by Owler Inc., a company headquartered in San Mateo, California, that specializes in competitive intelligence and business data aggregation. First documented in 2016, the bot’s primary purpose is to collect publicly available company information—including revenue estimates, employee headcounts, news mentions, and executive changes—from corporate websites, press releases, and news outlets. The harvested data feeds Owler’s flagship product, the Owler competitive intelligence platform, which provides users with real-time insights and alerts about competitors. Unlike search engine bots, Owler-bot focuses exclusively on business-related content and does not index the broader web.
Owler-bot performs targeted, low-frequency crawls rather than broad sweeps of entire domains. According to the official Owler documentation available at https://www.owler.com/crawler, the bot respects standard HTTP caching headers (e.g., Last-Modified, ETag) and uses conditional GET requests to avoid downloading unchanged content. Crawl frequency is typically capped at a few dozen requests per day per domain, though this may increase for heavily monitored companies. The bot identifies itself via reverse DNS records that resolve to IP ranges owned by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform, as confirmed in Owler’s published IP list. It uses HTTP/1.1 and HTTPS exclusively, and it does not execute JavaScript or render pages—only fetches raw HTML and meta tags.
Owler-bot fully honors robots.txt directives. Owler explicitly states on its crawler information page that the bot “respects all standard Disallow rules and Crawl-Delay directives.” Independent testing by security researchers (e.g., BotScout analysis, 2023) has confirmed that Owler-bot never accesses paths listed in robots.txt and adheres to Allow overrides. It also supports the User-agent: owler-bot line in robots.txt for custom rules.
The primary User-Agent string is Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Owler-bot/1.0; +https://www.owler.com/crawler). Additional identifying headers include From: [email protected] and a custom X-Owler-Crawl: 1 header that may appear in requests. The bot’s IP addresses are published at https://www.owler.com/crawler/ip-list and currently include ranges from 54.x.x.x (AWS EC2) and 35.x.x.x (GCP). Behaviorally, it always sends a User-Agent and a Referer field often set to the root of the target domain.
Collected data is used exclusively to populate Owler’s competitive intelligence product, which delivers company profiles, news summaries, and market alerts to paying subscribers. No content is used for AI model training, advertising, or resale to third parties. Owler’s Privacy Policy (effective 2024) states that personal information inadvertently collected is anonymized and not retained beyond 30 days.
Owler-bot is rate-limited because its focused crawling pattern can still overload poorly configured servers if multiple pages are accessed in rapid succession—especially for small business sites. The recommended threshold for blocking is 100 requests per day per IP, as per Owler’s own guidelines, to ensure the bot does not degrade server performance for human users while still allowing timely data collection.
