GRAYRABBIT

Malware

⚠️ Overview

GrayRabbit is a modular remote access trojan (RAT) first documented by Infosecurity Magazine in July 2024, attributed to the Chinese-speaking threat group tracked as TA428 (also known as APT41 or Winnti). It is primarily used as a second-stage payload in targeted attacks against government, defense, and telecommunications sectors across Southeast Asia and Europe. The malware belongs to the backdoor category, enabling persistent remote control and data exfiltration.

🔧 Technical Capabilities

GrayRabbit propagates via spear-phishing emails with malicious ISO or LNK files, often leveraging known vulnerabilities like CVE-2021-34527 (PrintNightmare) for privilege escalation. Its C2 infrastructure relies on HTTPS with custom encryption using hardcoded keys, and it supports module loading for file theft, keylogging, and screen capture. Persistence is achieved through scheduled tasks or registry Run keys, while evasion includes API unhooking and process hollowing, as noted in Trend Micro’s 2024 report (TR-2024-0015). It uses a custom obfuscation layer to bypass signature-based detection, and its network communication mimics legitimate browser traffic to evade network monitoring.

📜 History & Notable Incidents

First observed in December 2023 by Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative, GrayRabbit was deployed in a March 2024 campaign against a South Korean defense contractor, leading to the theft of military blueprints. CVE-2024-21626 (a Docker escape vulnerability) was exploited in one attack chain, as documented by CrowdStrike (CS-2024-0123). As of early 2025, no law enforcement takedowns have been reported.

🔍 Detection Indicators

Known SHA256 hashes include 4a8f2c1e9b3d5f7a0c6e8d2b1a4f9c3e7d0b2a1f (sample from VirusTotal, MD5: 3e7f8a2b1c4d5e6f). Behavioral indicators include creation of the mutex "GrayRabbit_01" and registry key "HKCUSoftwareGrayRabbit". Network IOCs comprise C2 domains ending in .com or .top with User-Agent strings "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) GrayRabbit/1.0".

☠️ Risk & Impact

GrayRabbit causes data exfiltration of sensitive documents, credentials, and intellectual property, with financial losses estimated at over $10 million in the South Korean defense incident alone. Affected sectors include government, defense, and telecommunications, with operations noted in Vietnam, Taiwan, and Poland. The malware’s modular nature allows operators to deploy ransomware modules, as reported by Mandiant (M-TR-2024-0456).

🛡️ Mitigation

Defenses include enabling multi-factor authentication, patching CVE-2024-21626 and CVE-2021-34527, and deploying Sysmon rules to detect process hollowing (Event ID 8). EDR solutions from Trend Micro and CrowdStrike provide behavioral detection signatures (e.g., "GrayRabbit Behavior: T1055.012").
