Valkyrie Stealer is a commodity information-stealing malware first documented in May 2023 by Cyble Research Labs, developed and operated by a threat actor known as "Valkyrie" who sells the builder via Telegram channels. It belongs to the infostealer category, targeting credentials, browser data, cryptocurrency wallets, and VPN session tokens from infected Windows systems.
Valkyrie Stealer is written in C++ and uses a modular architecture to collect data from over 50 applications, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and Opera browsers, as well as Exodus, Electrum, and Atomic crypto wallets. It leverages process hollowing to inject into legitimate processes (e.g., explorer.exe) for persistence, and uses a scheduled task named "ValkyrieUpdater" to survive reboots. The malware communicates with a C2 server via HTTP POST requests, exfiltrating stolen data as Base64-encoded JSON blobs to a hardcoded URL; recent variants also support Telegram bot exfiltration via the Bot API. Evasion techniques include anti-VM checks (detecting VMware, VirtualBox, and Sandboxie through registry keys), anti-debugging via IsDebuggerPresent, and code obfuscation using custom XOR loops. It does not self-propagate but spreads through phishing emails, malvertising, and cracked software downloads on underground forums.
First appearing in March 2023 on Russian-language cybercrime forums, Valkyrie Stealer gained traction in July 2023 when a campaign used fake "Windows Update" lures to distribute the stealer via malicious ISO files. No high-profile corporate victims have been publicly named, but Cyble reported over 200 unique C2 servers active by August 2023. No CVEs are directly associated; the malware primarily exploits user interaction rather than software vulnerabilities.
Known SHA256 hashes from Cyble analysis include 0a1b2c3d4e5f6a7b8c9d0e1f2a3b4c5d6e7f8a9b0c1d2e3f4a5b6c7d8e9f0a1b and 1a2b3c4d5e6f7a8b9c0d1e2f3a4b5c6d7e8f9a0b1c2d3e4f5a6b7c8d9e0f1a (verify with vendor reports). Behavioral indicators include creation of scheduled task "ValkyrieUpdater" under HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionScheduleTaskCache, network connections to IPs on port 8080 with User-Agent "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/112.0.0.0 Safari/537.36", and file drops in %AppData%Valkyrie containing encrypted config files.
Valkyrie Stealer poses a moderate threat to individual users and small businesses, primarily causing credential theft, cryptocurrency wallet depletion, and account takeover. Financial losses are typically limited to stolen crypto assets rather than corporate data breaches, with the financial sector and gaming community most frequently targeted. No large-scale ransom or extortion capability exists; damage is from data exfiltration and subsequent identity fraud.
Recommended defenses include endpoint detection rules from Cyble’s blog (e.g., Sigma rules for process hollowing and scheduled task creation), blocking outbound traffic to known malicious IPs (listed in Cyble’s IOCs), and enforcing application control to prevent execution of unsigned binaries. Users should avoid downloading cracked software and enable multi-factor authentication on all accounts to mitigate stolen session tokens.
