Description

An integer overflow exists in the FTS5 https://sqlite.org/fts5.html  extension. It occurs when the size of an array of tombstone pointers is calculated and truncated into a 32-bit integer. A pointer to partially controlled data can then be written out of bounds.

Distribution advisory

This page covers CVE-2025-7709 as tracked by Ubuntu, for the package sqlite3. The fix is available in version 3.45.1-1ubuntu2.5; earlier versions remain affected.

How this vulnerability can be exploited

This issue can be reached over the network, attack complexity is high, an attacker needs low-level privileges on the target. A user must actively cooperate. Rated impact: confidentiality none, integrity high, availability low.

CVSS metrics in full

The score comes from this vector: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:L/UI:A/VC:N/VI:H/VA:L/SC:N/SI:H/SA:L

  • Attack vector: Network — reachable from anywhere that can route to the service.
  • Attack complexity: High — the attacker first has to win a race, learn a secret or otherwise prepare the target.
  • Attack requirements: Present — the target has to be in a particular state for the attack to work.
  • Privileges required: Low — an ordinary user account is enough.
  • User interaction: Active — the victim has to cooperate with the attack.
  • Confidentiality impact: None.
  • Integrity impact: High — total loss, or loss the attacker controls.
  • Availability impact: Low — limited, and the attacker does not choose what is affected.

Weakness class

UBUNTU-CVE-2025-7709 is classified as CWE-190: Integer Overflow or Wraparound. Arithmetic produces a value too large for its type and wraps around, so a later size or bounds check passes when it should not.
