Description

OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0, a signed integer overflow in QueryRGBBufferSizeInternal() in DPXColorConverter.cpp leads to a heap-based out-of-bounds write when processing crafted DPX image files. The function computes buffer sizes using 32-bit signed integer arithmetic with negative multipliers (e.g., pixels * -3 * bytes for kCbYCr descriptors and pixels * -4 * bytes for kABGR descriptors), where a negative result is used as an in-band signal that no separate buffer is needed. When the pixel count is sufficiently large, the multiplication overflows INT_MIN and wraps to a small positive value. The caller in dpxinput.cpp interprets this positive value as a required buffer size, allocates an undersized heap buffer via m_decodebuf.resize(), and then writes the full image data into it via fread, resulting in a heap buffer overflow. An attacker can exploit this by crafting a DPX file that triggers the overflow, causing a denial of service (crash) or potentially arbitrary code execution through heap corruption in any application that reads pixel data using OpenImageIO. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0.

Distribution advisory

This page covers CVE-2026-43907 as tracked by Ubuntu, for the package openimageio. The fix is available in version 2.5.19.1+dfsg-2ubuntu0.1~esm1; earlier versions remain affected.

How this vulnerability can be exploited

This issue can be reached over the network, attack complexity is low, an attacker needs no privileges on the target. A user must be tricked into taking some action. The scope is unchanged, so the impact stays within the vulnerable component. Rated impact: confidentiality low, integrity high, availability high.

CVSS metrics in full

The score comes from this vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:H

  • Attack vector: Network — reachable from anywhere that can route to the service.
  • Attack complexity: Low — the attack works reliably, with no preparation.
  • Privileges required: None — an unauthenticated stranger can try it.
  • User interaction: Required — someone has to click, open or visit something.
  • Scope: Unchanged — the damage stays inside the vulnerable component.
  • Confidentiality impact: Low — limited, and the attacker does not choose what is affected.
  • Integrity impact: High — total loss, or loss the attacker controls.
  • Availability impact: High — total loss, or loss the attacker controls.

Weakness class

UBUNTU-CVE-2026-43907 is classified as CWE-190: Integer Overflow or Wraparound. Arithmetic produces a value too large for its type and wraps around, so a later size or bounds check passes when it should not.

Affected software

UBUNTU-CVE-2026-43907 is recorded against 1 package.

  • openimageio (fixed in 2.5.19.1+dfsg-2ubuntu0.1~esm1)
